The LED (light emitting diode) is one of today’s most rapidly developing and energy efficient illuminating technologies. Quality LED based light bulbs are more durable, last longer, and offer comparable, if not better light quality compared to other types of lamps.


Energy Savings


Light emitting diodes have the potential to change the future of lighting in the U.S. as they are extremely energy efficient. Commercial LEDs last 5 times longer and consume at least 70% less energy, than incandescent lamps. The energy savings are so substantial that you can use the cost savings gained from retrofitting your lighting facilities to finance the replacement of your traditional bulbs with modern LED lamps.
Widespread use of LED lighting offers the biggest potential impact on saving of energy in the U.S. Widespread use of LEDs could save approximately 348 TWh of electricity by 2027 (compared to no LED use). This is equal to the yearly electricity generation of 44 large power plants, each generating 1000 megawatts, as well as a total savings in excess of $30 billion at today’s electricity costs.


How LEDs are different and their energy efficiency


LED lighting is quite different compared with other lighting sources like CFLs and incandescent bulbs. The main differences include:
• Light Source: LEDs are extremely tiny and a mix of blue, green, and red diodes are typically used to generate white light.
• Direction: LED bulbs emit light in a particular direction. This reduces the requirement of diffusers and reflectors, which can trap light. Thanks to this feature, LEDs are more efficient for numerous applications such as task lighting and recessed downlights. The light must be reflected to the desired direction when using other types of lighting, and more than 60% of the light might never leave the fixture.
• Heat: LEDs emit an insignificant amount of heat. Comparatively, CFLs and incandescent bulbs release 80% and 90% of their energy as heat, respectively.
